So, apparently, companies are looking at their employees’ Facebook pages. Statuses like, “I’M SO FUCKING WASTED!” or “FUCK YOU, ‘INSERT BOSS NAME OR EMPLOYEE HERE’” and other reputation-destroying content become grounds for suspension and/or termination.

Is this a good move for companies to weed out employees that are slacking off outside the work area?

Or does this infringe upon privacy rights despite the fact that responsible employees come to work with their heads in work-mode?

I think it’s a little ridiculous for people to advertise their lives (private, partying, family, etc.) on social networking sites, particularly if the message is negative. I think it’s a pretty good reflection of their work ethic. I don’t think established companies have enough time to weed out current employees and fire them based on a facebook status, but I don’t think there is any hurt in screening prospective employees. Anyways, a social networking site is for social networking. If a worker looking for a job doesn’t understand that they are making their lives more visible by participating in a social networking site then perhaps they’re not entirely valuable to that company.
